Globalizing An Iconic Chinese Brand
GEMBA 10th Anniversary Seminar Series:
Globalization and Innovation at Chinese Enterprises

10 November 2013

James Rice, CEO of Shuijingfang gives speech to GEMBA students and guests.

Our GEMBA X class welcomed about one hundred visitors to the SJTU Antai main lecture hall to hear an insightful and remarkably candid talk from our long-time support Mr. James Rice, who earlier this year was named CEO of Shuijingfang, one of China’s leading baijiu brands. Rice is the only foreign-born head of a company listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Rice spoke at length about the critical challenges Shuijingfang faces in 2013 and beyond. He also referenced his 25 years in China, as background for him to be able to succeed in his new role.

As an introduction to Rice’s talk, we heard words of welcome from the Antai College’s Associate Dean, Prof. Lv Wei, while GEMBA’s Academic Director, Professor Baizhu Chen, moderated the event, including the Q&A that followed Rice’s talk. Chen has published a business case about Rice in his previous role, as head of Tyson China, and is working on a case about Shuijingfang.

Our guests then enjoyed examples of Shuijingfang’s innovation – cocktails made from baijiu designed to appeal to younger people and the international set.

The Shuijingfang event was one component of a series we’re hosting this year, “Globalization and Innovation at Chinese Enterprises”, to mark GEMBA’s ten-year anniversary. Previous speakers in the series have included Jonathan Wang, a director at Yihaodian, one of China’s leading e-commerce brands. In early 2014, we’ll screen a documentary about the establishment and development of Alibaba, made by a former officer of the company who will share his thoughts with us after the screening.
