GEMBA XIII Los Angeles Session

June 2016

The USC-SJTU Global EMBA Program in Shanghai (GEMBA) Class XIII just finished their second module, in Los Angeles. Students flew to L.A. from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea and elsewhere for the eight-day study session, featuring the beautiful USC campus and California sunshine.

GEMBA classes at the World-renowned Marshall School of Business
GEMBA members are officially USC students, and every June brings their first classes on the USC campus. The theme they are studying from June through August, Evaluating Market Performance, is typical of the integrated, theme-based curriculum uniquely designed by the USC Marshall School of Business. In this theme, four USC Marshall faculty lead dynamic class sessions from the perspective of accounting, statistics, corporate finance and communications leadership.

One highly regarded session was Professor Greg Patton’s executive communication training, with group discussions one by one presentations recorded on video, for follow-on analysis and reflection. The students made great progress in their second round of presentations.

Aside from engaging with the top-ranked faculty, GEMBA students visited the USC bookstore to buy USC souvenirs and wore them while walking around the campus and posing in front of Tommy Trojan. They also had the opportunity to network with other Marshall programs such as IBEAR.

Ex-classroom engagement with the international city of Los Angeles
Los Angeles is probably the most international of all the U.S. cities, an ideal reflection of the diverse GEMBA class members. Our GEMBA XIII class has several students based in L.A. They showed their hospitality by arranging a barbecue dinner in Korea Town, visits to famous scenic spots such as Beverly Hills, the Hollywood Walk of Stars, the beach and pier, etc. The class also enjoyed Southern California’s iconic In-N-Out Burger.

Engagement with GEMBA Alumni
Several alumni from different GEMBA classes (I, IV, VIII, IX, X, Xi and XII) visited campus to welcome GEMBA XIII and demonstrate the lifelong value of being part of the GEMBA family. They were either based in L.A., on a business trip or touring the city. The alumni shared their experience in GEMBA and also talked about their development after GEMBA. Rajeev Kapur from GEMBA 9 gave an impressive TED-stye talk, sharing his insights about technology development, artificial intelligence and the application for these cutting edge technologies.

Site visit to VNTANA at Los Angeles; engagement with CMO French

Our class engaged powerfully during their visit to VNTANA at LAX, featuring a deeply informative talk by CMO Ms Natascha French, who shared the story of founding VNTANA, the company’s challenges and the surprisingly fast development. VNTANA now is the partner of Mercedes-Benz and Microsoft, and the VR and hologram technology is in a wide range of applications already.
